New Insights on How Americans View Homelessness from the Alliance
The Alliance has released the results of a new public opinion polling on how Americans view homelessness, conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of the Alliance. The results provide insights around the following:
- The public’s engagement with and awareness of homelessness
- The public’s confidence in the ability to end homelessness
- The public’s attitudes on causes of and solutions to homelessness
- The public’s perspective of organizations working to solve homelessness
According to the survey, 71% of those polled agree that homeless organizations are trying to make a difference, but that they lack the resources needed to make a real impact. 67% of respondents believe that organizations serving people experiencing homelessness are sometimes effective, but sometimes
not. And while 62% of respondents say that they have either “a lot” or “some” confidence in the sector, approximately half (51%) expressed support for only funding organizations if they are proven to reduce homelessness in their communities.
This data largely points to the perception that Americans broadly trust the sector and understand that our efforts are hamstrung by underfunding, yet they also support withholding funds if homelessness is not reduced. Correcting this perception by demonstrating impact is critical for boosting our field’s credibility, strengthening advocacy for greater resources, and building support for its efforts.
